Chairman’s Speech
I am delighted to be here today on behalf of the Igbo-Owu Old Students Association set 1992 (IGBOSSAA ’92) to commission and hand-over the rehabilitated food mart for both the junior and senior schools to the schools’ authorities.
The alumni is ever so committed in creating a conducive learning environment for the students. The rehabilitation of the food mart by the Association is a direct response to this call. We equally acknowledge that provision of appropriate food to the students helps support their growth and development. Various research has corroborated the fact that what students eat can affect not only their physical health but also their moods, mental health and learning. While food intake is important, the ambience is equally key. The look and feel of the canteen will create the natural stimulant for a healthy appetite.
As with our past initiatives, this initiative is borne out of the need to give back to the alma mater. We are proud to be with you today on this great occasion. We enjoin the school authorities and the students to make the best use of these facilities.
We reiterate once again, that the development of key educational infrastructures cannot be totally left in the hands of government. Old students’ associations have an important role in bridging the infrastructural gaps. The gains of collectively building these institutions have far reaching implications in the larger society. Infrastructural development is a complement to the primary purpose of education, which is good academic and moral standing for personal and socioeconomic development.
Away from food and its complements, the association wants to use this opportunity to appeal to parents and school authorities to teach the students the right morals. A good and sound education encompasses both moral and academic uprightness. Our society is fast falling apart due to high level of moral decadence amongst our student’s population.
In essence, we have a lot of work our hands as parents, teachers, guardians to steer our wards in the right direction. The shape of the society takes place from homes and schools. The Old students’ association set 1992 is committed to walk this journey with you. We will continue to provide support to the students and mentor them towards becoming a better ambassador of the school and by extension, the country. Our watchword is ‘’Iwe kiko laisi eko, ko ti pe’’.
And now, Ladies and Gentlemen, I ask you to admire your new food marts. It may not be the very best but clearly a major deviation from the old mart as you know it. We have expanded its length and breadth, supported it with iron bars for safety, provided seats for comforts and beautified it with modern painting and wall designs.
We want to thank the officials of the school for giving us the free hand to handle the project. Our appreciation goes to the various donors (monetary and non-monetary) to the project under the auspices of the Project committee. We cannot but acknowledge the exemplary leadership of the Chairman, IGBOSSA ’92 set. We also appreciate the invaluable contributions of the EXCO arm of the association.
I, being the chairman of the project committee now have the pleasure and honour to inaugurate these Rehabilitated and Renovated food marts and handed over to the schools by the Igbo-Owu Secondary School Old student’s association set 1992 to the Glory of God and the development of the students of the school and the State.
Long live the School.
Long Live Lagos State.
Long Live Federal Republic of Nigeria.
